DiUS Computing appointed RHoK’s first regional partner in Australia

Community-minded technologists aim to use technology to alleviate problems faced by Australians

Melbourne — Australian-based technology services company DiUS Computing is proud to announce that it has been appointed Random Hacks of Kindness (RHoK)’s first Regional Partner in Australia.

RHoK is an international community of innovation focused on developing practical open technology solutions to make the world a better place. RHoK was founded in 2009 by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, NASA, and the World Bank after hearing about the challenges that NGOs, governments, and first responders face during disaster response. The founding sponsor organisations came together to create an active development community of volunteers to build applications that support disaster response and humanitarian relief. RHoK has more recently broadened its scope to tackle worldwide development challenges.

DiUS is an Australian technology services firm that helps clients innovate and grow, employing more than a hundred people over its Melbourne and Sydney offices. As a regional partner, DiUS will help develop RHoK’s strategy in Australia, including working to build deeper relationships with RHoK volunteers between events, and finding ways that technology and volunteer technologists can solve problems faced by Australia.

RHoK works by bringing together experts in development and volunteers with a broad set of skills in software development and design. RHoK hosts “hackathon” weekend events as part of its approach to social impact, giving the community an opportunity to sprint on projects. RHoK events often end with fully functional products. The 4000-strong international community continues to collaborate year round, expanding the reach of the projects worked on. Australian civic hacktivists have already been involved in global RHoK hackathons to build applications for humanity at events in Sydney and Melbourne since 2010.

Todd Khozein, RHoK Core Team Member at SecondMuse, RHoK’s Global Operational Lead organisation, said that as RHoK has grown throughout the world, the role of the regional partner has become increasingly important.

“In our regional partners we look for organizations that are deeply committed to building a lasting community of RHoK stars dedicated to hacking for humanity. We are thrilled to welcome DiUS as our first Australian regional partner. DiUS is an innovative technology services company with a deep understanding of open source and emerging technologies and the impact that these technologies can have on local communities.

“The Australian RHoK community has consistently been a strong contributor to the global community creating relevant applications such as Bushfire Connect, VicAlerts and VicSafe. With DiUS helping to expand the positive impact of RHoK in Australia we eagerly look forward to the many more hacks that are surely on their way,” he said.

Daryl Wilding-McBride, CTO, DiUS Computing said the partnership is a good fit for DiUS because of the company’s desire to make a measurable difference in the communities in which it works and lives.

“As a RHoK regional partner, we now have an increased opportunity to extend DiUS’s focus on innovation and delivering value through smarter software beyond commercial applications. DiUS is excited to help build the capacity of RHoK and increase the impact of its humanitarian work in Australia and globally,” he said.

DiUS’s immediate focus will be to engage with local government, notforprofit and subject matter experts to help identify, define and refine development problems faced by Australians, and to leverage its connections within the technical community to grow RHoK developer volunteerism.

The next Australian RHoK hackathon will be held on the December 1-2 weekend in Melbourne. The RHoK community is open to anybody who wants to volunteer their skills or suggest a problem to solve. DiUS encourages anybody who wants to be involved to contact Daryl Wilding-McBride at dwm@dius.com.au or to visit the RHoK website www.rhok.org.
