On the eleventh day of festivus my colleague gave to me, eleven numbats nagging!
Introducing Software Engineer Bethany Skurrie
I love to solve problems and make useful things, and sometimes even use a computer to do so. At work, I’m a Ruby developer and occasional speaker. At home, I enjoy working in my garden, reading pop science, and labeling random things with my new labeller.
What book have you reviewed?
What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions (2014) by Randall Munroe.
What is this book about?
What if? is a book by the author of the xkcd webcomic, Randall Munroe, containing, (as it describes in its subtitle) Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions. For example, “what would happen if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90% of the speed of light?” and “Is it possible to build a jetpack using downward-firing machine guns?” – the important questions in life.
What did you enjoy most about this book?
This book, like the Ig Nobel Prize, makes you laugh and think. Munroe mixes his xkcd brand of humour into all of his responses, however he backs up his reasoning with genuine scientific references. If you like pondering the big scientific questions of life (“how much force power can Yoda output?”), then this book is for you.
