Generative AI is changing how we work, create, and interact with technology. But building successful generative AI tools isn’t just about cutting-edge engineering, it’s about thoughtful design. Even the most powerful model won’t gain traction if users don’t trust it, and trust starts with creating experiences that feel clear, approachable, and centered on people. 

These tools often feel like a “black box,” producing impressive outputs but leaving users unsure of how or why they reached those conclusions. That’s where design steps in. By creating interfaces that guide, inform, and empower, we help users not only trust the technology but also feel confident in using it.

It’s not just about appearances, it’s about giving users control and understanding. Think of it like this:

  • How can we help users see the steps the generative AI product took to produce an answer?
  • How do we guide them toward better inputs for better results?
  • How do we handle mistakes or unexpected outcomes without frustration?

Design acts as the bridge between technical precision and user confidence. It’s about creating tools that don’t just work well, they feel like they’re working with you.

The challenges of earning trust in generative AI

Generative AI tools hold incredible promise, but let’s be honest, they’re not always easy to trust. For many users, it feels like the generative AI tool takes their input, produces an answer, and keeps the “why” hidden. That lack of clarity naturally raises doubts.

And then there’s the issue of mistakes. Generative AI models aren’t perfect, and users know that. But when a system confidently gives the wrong answer without acknowledging its limitations, it feels frustrating and impersonal. It’s not the errors themselves that break trust, it’s the lack of transparency around them.

Another sticking point is control. If settings are buried or overly complicated, users are left wondering just how much influence they really have. Imagine asking a generative AI tool for help, but not having any clear way to steer the conversation. Without visible options or a sense of control, users feel disconnected from the process, and that’s where trust erodes.

For users to feel confident in the tool’s decisions, they need a clear view of how the system arrives at its conclusions.

One way to achieve this is by making the generative AI tool’s thought process visible. For instance, if someone asks for a business forecast, the tool shouldn’t just give a number, it should explain its steps. Something like: “Here’s how I arrived at this: I analysed revenue data from the past three years and combined it with industry trends.” Breaking this down visually, like a process flow: “Step 1: Collected data. Step 2: Analysed trends. Step 3: Created projection”, makes it even easier to follow.

This level of clarity not only helps users understand but also empowers them. If they notice something missing or inaccurate, they can step in, provide feedback, and refine the output. It turns the AI into a collaborator rather than a mysterious tool.

Transparency also means citing sources. Whether it’s generating a legal summary or planning a trip, users deserve to know where the information comes from. Imagine generative AI giving medical advice without referencing studies or sources, it’s a dealbreaker. Instead, tools should provide clickable links or source summaries, giving users the chance to verify and explore further. For example, when we implemented citations at Lifeblood to navigate complex donor eligibility guidelines in a Proof of Concept, we found that users felt more comfortable when they could quickly reference the section of the Guidelines for the Selection of Blood Donors PDF source document that the model used to generate its response. Having direct citations gave users confidence in the generative AI’s accuracy and made verification seamless.

When users understand how generative AI thinks, they don’t just trust the tool, they learn to work alongside it.

Then there’s the concept of trust meters. Confidence indicators, like “I’m 85% sure based on verified data”, can help users gauge how reliable an answer is. Think of it like risk profiles in financial apps: they empower people to decide how much weight to give the response. For example, a financial planning tool might use trust meters to distinguish between solid recommendations, such as projections based on verified tax data, and less reliable estimates drawn from anecdotal trends. By displaying this nuance, users can better assess when to rely on the AI and when to seek additional validation.

Ultimately, transparency isn’t about overwhelming users with technical details. It’s about providing just enough clarity to help them feel informed and in control. When users see the process, understand the reasoning, and trust the sources, skepticism turns into confidence.

User control: Designing for empowerment

When users feel in control, generative AI becomes an extension of their creativity, not a mysterious force making decisions for them. Empowerment is at the heart of trust.

Visible controls are a great starting point. Parameters like tone, style, or creativity shouldn’t be hidden in settings. They should be front and center, intuitive to adjust, and clear in their impact. For example, a writing assistant could have a simple menu: “Choose a tone: Professional, Conversational, or Creative.” This approach gives users the tools to shape outputs to fit their needs without feeling overwhelmed.

Equally important is guiding users. Not everyone knows how to get the best results from an AI. Providing templates, live examples, and prompt suggestions can make all the difference. Instead of guessing, users can rely on helpful cues like: “Ask me to summarise in three points” or “Try: ‘Rewrite this with a casual tone.’”

At Lifeblood, we implemented similar controls in the Document Summariser Proof of Concept. Users could easily configure how content was summarised, which not only helped them shape the outputs to their needs but also reduced the time required to start summarising content. When controls are intuitive and well-placed, users feel in charge of the AI rather than at its mercy.

These controls and guides don’t just improve usability, they build trust. They signal that the tool is flexible, responsive, and working in partnership with the user. Importantly, they also create a safety net for experimentation. When users know they can adjust parameters or refine their prompts, they’re more likely to engage deeply with the tool, exploring its potential without fear of getting stuck with an undesired outcome.

By putting the user in the driver’s seat, design bridges the gap between technology and human intention. The result? A generative AI experience that feels empowering, collaborative, and firmly under the user’s control.

Error handling: Building confidence even in failure

Mistakes happen. What matters isn’t avoiding errors entirely but handling them in a way that keeps users engaged and reassured.

Take graceful failure, for example. Instead of a cold “Error 404,” why not say: “I couldn’t find the answer, can you provide more details?” A human-centered response doesn’t just explain the issue, it invites users to collaborate on fixing it.

Consistency matters here too. Whether the generative AI has a friendly or professional tone, it should stay consistent, even during errors. For instance: “Oops, I didn’t understand that. Can you rephrase it?” feels far more cohesive and approachable than a generic error message.

Finally, actionable next steps are critical. Users should never feel stuck or at a dead end. Providing suggestions, rephrased prompts, or alternative paths ensures the interaction continues smoothly. For instance: “I couldn’t generate the summary because the document is too large, try uploading a shorter section or specifying key points to focus on.”

By handling errors with empathy, clarity, and consistency, design can turn setbacks into more confident interactions. Instead of undermining confidence, these interactions leave users feeling heard, respected, and more inclined to rely on the tool for future tasks.

Iterative feedback: Learning with your users

A generative AI product is never truly finished, it thrives on continuous learning and adaptation. One of the most effective ways to evolve a tool and build user trust is through iterative feedback.

Feedback loops, like rating responses or suggesting improvements, keep users engaged and give them a voice. Simple mechanisms, like thumbs-up/thumbs-down buttons, make it easy to share thoughts without interrupting workflow.

More importantly, acting on feedback matters. Imagine receiving a message: “Thanks for your feedback, our next update will include your suggestion for more concise summaries!” That validates the user’s contribution and shows the product is actively evolving.

By continuously refining based on user feedback, generative AI tools feel more dynamic and responsive, making users feel like active participants rather than passive consumers. This cycle of feedback and improvement reinforces the trust users place in the system.

Data bias, privacy, and guardrails

Another crucial area worth mentioning is how design can influence bias, data privacy, and system guardrails, each of which could be a post on its own. The way a large language  model is trained directly impacts the fairness and accuracy of its outputs, and design plays a significant role in shaping that training process. Thoughtful UX can guide how data is collected, ensuring diverse, high-quality inputs rather than reinforcing existing biases. For example, allowing users to flag biased responses or providing transparency about dataset sources can improve trust and accountability over time.

Data privacy and sensitivity are also key considerations. Generative AI systems often process sensitive information, and clear design choices, like permission settings, data retention policies, and explainable data use, help users feel secure. A well-designed experience should make it obvious what data is being used and give users control over how it’s handled.

Finally, guardrails help ensure that generative AI stays within its intended scope, preventing misleading or incorrect outputs. When generative AI tools are designed with well-defined constraints, they become more reliable. A finance assistant, for example, should never speculate beyond verified financial data, and a legal generative AI tool shouldn’t attempt to provide personal legal advice. Thoughtful system design, like scoped responses, disclaimers, and built-in content moderation, ensures generative AI remains a trustworthy tool rather than an unchecked source of misinformation.

Final thoughts: Designing generative AI that feels human

Trust isn’t something users give automatically, it’s earned through thoughtful interactions. Every time generative AI explains its logic, admits to a limitation, or responds with empathy, it builds a connection. Over time, these moments transform the technology from a tool into a trusted partner.

For designers, the challenge is exciting. It’s not just about making generative AI functional, it’s about making it relatable, clear, and empowering.
