IoT at the Core of AWS re:Invent 2022

AWS re:invent might just be the biggest cloud event of the year, but with over 120 service, capability and technology announcements, it’s hard to know where to start!

So, we asked IoT Specialists at DiUS, Paul Marsh and Louis Moore, for their top three IoT announcements that will improve how our clients deliver better business and customer value from their connected devices and products.

Track and manage IoT devices with new location data capabilities

AWS IoT Core Device Location is a new feature that enables organisations to track and manage their IoT devices using location data through IP, cellular triangulation and Wifi, along with latitude and longitude coordinates.

Additional IoT rules are now also available to transmit this data to AWS location services, giving organisations the ability to build location based features for their IoT devices such as visual maps and geofencing, as well as tracking current and historical locations.

This feature will provide simplicity in the development of location based services in IoT devices for industries such as emergency services, fleet management, logistics, and environmental monitoring and control.

Collect, transform and transfer real-time vehicle data to the cloud

AWS IoT FleetWise enables the rapid development of device software for automakers, fleet operators and automotive suppliers. It ingests, correlates and augments real-time sensor data provided by vehicles, then transfers it to the cloud for data processing.

Through the ingestion, transformation, and control of sensor data from CAN and OPC networks, AWS provides the ability to model various systems within the vehicle. For example, organisations are then able to use this data to identify maintenance requirements such as fuel/combustion, drive chains and steering, performance improvements, and the ecological impacts of a single vehicle or fleet of vehicles—just to name a few.

This is just one more tool in our toolbox that will help to greatly reduce the development cycle for our clients when building device software to meet their evolving business needs.

Updated device-to-cloud MQTT messaging communication standards

General availability of MQTT5 brings a number of new features and improvements to this protocol, including shared subscriptions, enhanced security and improved error handling.

One of the key changes in MQTT5 is the introduction of new message types, such as the response message and the message expiration interval. These new message types enable greater flexibility and functionality in messaging applications. MQTT5 also introduces a new return code system to improve error handling and messaging reliability. Additionally, MQTT5 allows for the sending of larger payloads, up to 16 MB, making it more suitable for use in applications with larger data requirements as well as the ability for the device to dictate the accepted message size making the system more robust.

AWS IoT Core supports both MQTT 3.1.1 and MQTT5 versions, giving developers the ability to choose the version that best fits their needs.
