DiUS Attains AWS Machine Learning Competency, First in Australia & New Zealand

Launches machine-learning software product to improve the mineral discovery process for mining and exploration companies

Press release MELBOURNE; August 21, 2019 – Leading Australian technology services company, DiUS, is delighted to announce that it’s the first partner in Australia and New Zealand to attain the AWS Machine Learning Competency.

Founded in 2004, DiUS provides software and hardware consulting services to transform clients’ businesses. Leaders in all things digital, data and devices, DiUS focuses on the application of emerging technologies and practices including agile/lean, experience design, cloud, the internet of things, virtual/augmented reality and artificial intelligence to help its clients achieve their goals.

The AWS Competency Program is designed to highlight AWS Partner Network (APN) partners who have demonstrated technical proficiency and proven customer success in specialised solution areas. To become an AWS Machine Learning Competency Partner, companies undergo a rigorous validation process focussing on technical proficiency with the AWS ML platform underpinned by proven customer successes. APN Partners must also successfully complete a technical audit of their ML practice.

An early adopter of the cloud, AWS Advanced Consulting Partner DiUS has been leveraging the AWS cloud platform and services since 2007 and has been an AWS Partner since 2012. Attaining an AWS ML Competency builds on DiUS’ long-term success with AWS, having won AWS Consulting Partner of the Year 2016, AWS Innovation Partner of the Year 2017 and recent finalist for AWS Innovation Partner of the Year 2018.

“DiUS has always prided itself on delivering innovative and impactful outcomes for its clients and more recently this has included solving complex, real-world business problems through the application of machine learning techniques and algorithms. It’s a natural extension of our core capabilities in data engineering, the cloud, big data and analytics. We are thrilled to be recognised by AWS as a leader in this area,“ said DiUS co-founder and director, Joe Losinno.

There is high demand from organisations in Australia to deliver on the promise of machine learning, from improving customer engagement and loyalty through to supporting scientific breakthroughs in the area of diagnosing life-threatening disease.  DiUS’ Artificial Intelligence Practice meets these needs by helping organisations explore the capabilities of machine learning, understand the benefits and deliver machine learning-powered business value at scale

The most popular consumer-facing manifestation of machine learning DiUS is seeing in the Australian market is conversational AI—voice interaction and chatbots. A recent successful example is nibby the chatbot, that DiUS built to support nib health funds to become the first Australian health insurer to introduce artificial intelligence technology to assist Aussies with their health insurance enquiries.

More recently, interest in DiUS’ machine learning services has also been driven by the application of computer vision models, with a view to reinvent traditional processes and augment human decision-making processes—freeing workers to be more creative and deliver a more efficient and accurate outcome.

DiUS worked with Solve Geosolutions, a specialist exploration and mining geoscience company to use image segmentation technologies as a way to reinvent the process for geologists to analyse drill core samples to generate geological information.  The machine-learning powered solution detected veins in rock core imagery faster, more consistently and often at a higher or equal quality to a geologist.

“At Newcrest, we are building new skillsets to bolt on to our Geologists creativity, and that is to assess complex multi-dimensional data in real time to help our decision making. The end game is the discovery of gold, faster. The partnership with DiUS is incredibly valuable, their image processing capabilities have provided a new way of segmenting the gold veins in a drill core so it can be extracted from the core photos. I’ve asked traditional research avenues to do the same thing, DiUS was able to do this in two weeks.” said Anthony Harris, Chief Geoscientist, Newcrest Mining.

Building on the outcomes delivered in the mining and exploration sector, DiUS has formed a joint venture with Solve Geosolutions, to develop a machine-learning powered software product to improve the mineral discovery process.

Launched on May 1st, 2019 at the AWS Summit Sydney, the new SaaS product, DataRock, changes the way mining companies worldwide work, from exploration through to extraction. Providing accurate, fast and consistent high resolution information about a mineral deposit’s geology aids better decision making throughout the entire mining cycle, delivering important productivity and throughput savings to a mine’s bottom line.
